Launched during the Fiesta du Vélo avec Circonflexe event on September 9, the Circonflexe program introduced a free, ongoing bike loan service at the Relais plein air in Gatineau Park, offering electric bikes, Fat Bikes, and adapted equipment to promote active and inclusive outdoor recreation for individuals of all abilities, including those with physical limitations.
Residents can borrow these bikes for up to one hour daily, with free access always available to children under 15. Adapted bikes are provided at no cost to people with disabilities, with additional support services to ensure safe and enjoyable use. The program emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring that everyone can engage in cycling regardless of their physical ability.
Funded with $597,320 for the Outaouais region, the initiative involves 11 regional partners, including community leisure organizations and youth-focused non-profits. These partners offer various equipment based on community needs, such as bikes, pedal boats, skis, skates, and scooters, with the goal of increasing accessibility to outdoor sports.
Connected lockers for self-service loans will also be introduced in four parks—Maniwaki, Masham, Mansfield, and Papineauville—by fall 2024 to expand the program’s reach.
Reflecting a broader provincial effort, the Circonflexe program aims to foster active lifestyles, ensuring that people with disabilities and limited mobility can participate in outdoor activities year-round, while also promoting sustainable and active transportation for recreation and commuting.
