A tragic weekend on West Quebec’s waterways

Drazen Seslija

Two tragedies on Saturday, July 11, on West Quebec’s waterways claimed the lives of a seven-year-old child and a 71-year-old woman, requiring emergency services to be mobilized twice.

The first incident occurred around 1 pm in the Blanche River, near Drakkar Street in the Gatineau sector. The Gatineau Fire Department responded to rescue a seven-year-old boy who was in the water. The child was rushed to Gatineau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Gatineau Police Service (SPVG) indicated that the case has been transferred to the coroner, who is continuing his investigation to determine the circumstances of the tragedy. A security perimeter was also established at the scene to allow investigators and forensic identification technicians to carry out their work.

The same day, a second incident occurred at the beach in Parc des Cèdres in Aylmer. A 71-year-old woman was found unconscious in the Ottawa River. When police arrived, resuscitation efforts were already underway.

The woman was transported to the Hull Hospital, where her condition was initially stabilized. However, she died later that evening. According to the SPVG, the coroner was notified, but no further investigation was requested.

These two drownings serve as a reminder of the importance of exercising caution during water activities. Authorities urge the public to follow safety guidelines and to ensure constant supervision of children near water.
